SCHOOL, CURRENT ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Helen is currently Headteacher at Barrow Primary School near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk; an outstanding school and one of the lead schools in the ConnectED Teaching School Alliance. Helen is an experienced school leader and, having been appointed as an SLE in 2012, she has successfully supported schools and individuals across Suffolk to improve their own performance. This role has allowed her to develop excellence in teaching and learning in a variety of different settings. Helen has also been instrumental in the setting up, establishing and development of ConnectED; sitting on both the operational and now the strategic steering group of the TSA. She has led a number of StSS deployments and has designed and delivered a range of well attended CPD training events.
Helen’s particular professional interests include:
Helen has a been a TSA Key Area Lead for Research & Development and is interested in improving and developing professional learning through leading action research CPD projects. Through the process of lesson studies she is experienced at supporting and encouraging colleagues to collaborate and share knowledge and understanding through studies directly linked to the children’s learning and progress in order to raise standards and achievement in different areas of the curriculum.
Helen is committed to developing and implementing assessment and tracking systems for evaluating learners’ progress and attainment and as a means of judging the effectiveness of teaching within a school. Experienced in using a range of information, including local and national statistical data, she has already implemented many systems and procedures which have been successfully adopted in order to provide a whole school overview as a basis for improving teaching and learning. She is currently part of a working party aimed at developing assessment and tracking across all phases of education within the academy trust group of schools in which she works, in the wake of life after levels.
Her recent projects and achievements include:
A recent secondment as Head of School to a school in special measures. Rapid, but sustainable improvements were quickly achieved through setting ambitious, clear and achievable goals which were underpinned by detailed and effective improvement planning. Helen was instrumental in implementing rigorous monitoring with high expectations and shared accountability; evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives and learning outcomes to inform future action planning being at the core of successful improvement.
Helen is experienced at developing and increasing the effectiveness of middle leaders. A facilitator for NPQSL programme on behalf of the National College of Teaching & Leadership, she has employed her skills and experience to develop and influence the next generation of school leaders through the delivery of this accredited professional development qualification for middle leaders.
